CHAPTER 6:LIFE PROCESSES
EASY NOTES
1. Introduction:
👉Life processes are the essential activities carried out by living organisms to maintain life.
👉These processes include nutrition, respiration, transportation, excretion, and reproduction.
2. Nutrition:
👉It is the process by which organisms obtain and utilize food for growth, repair, and energy.
👉Autotrophic nutrition: Some organisms (like plants) can synthesize their own food using sunlight through the process of photosynthesis.
👉Heterotrophic nutrition: Most organisms depend on others for food and obtain it by ingestion, digestion, absorption, and assimilation.
3. Respiration:
👉It is the process of releasing energy from food.
👉In aerobic respiration, glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
👉In anaerobic respiration, glucose is broken down without the use of oxygen, producing energy and either alcohol or lactic acid.
4. Transportation:
👉It involves the movement of water, nutrients, gases, and waste products throughout the organism.
👉In plants, transportation occurs through the vascular tissues: xylem and phloem.
👉In animals, the circulatory system, which includes the heart, blood vessels, and blood, is responsible for transportation.
5. Excretion:
👉It is the removal of waste products from the body.
👉Plants eliminate waste gases and excess water through stomata and lenticels.
👉Animals remove waste through specific excretory organs, such as kidneys in humans.
6. Reproduction:
👉It is the process by which organisms produce offspring.
👉Asexual reproduction involves the production of offspring from a single parent without the involvement of gametes.
👉Sexual reproduction involves the fusion of male and female gametes to form a zygote, which develops into a new individual.
7. Control and Coordination:
👉It is the process by which organisms respond to stimuli and maintain internal coordination.
👉In plants, control and coordination occur through plant hormones.
👉In animals, the nervous system and endocrine system work together to control and coordinate various activities.
8. Summary:
👉Life processes are essential for the survival and growth of living organisms.
👉These processes include nutrition, respiration, transportation, excretion, reproduction, and control and coordination.
